Madhya Pradesh

Known to have been born out of a tear drop that fell out of Shiva’s eyes, the Narmada has always had a strong connection with Lord Shiva. On its stunning Ghats, is a small holy town dedicated to Lord Shiva that draws pilgrims and Hindu holy men to its ancient temples. Maheshwar is now popular for the 16th century fort, built by Emperor Akbar, that dominates the town. This fort offers a panoramic view over the river and ghats. During her reign, Ahilyabai Holkar added a palace and numerous riverside temples to it. Another legacy of the Holkar family is the exquisite Maheshwari sari, with a weave so delicate that it has put Maheshwar on the global textile map.
