Large Blog ImageELLORA

Maharashtra

Located in a political and commercial center of yore, with a busy trade route passing right through, are the caves of Ellora. Ancient Indian rock-cut architecture witnessed its peak when these 34 caves were chipped out laboriously over five centuries by generations of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain monks. As they at once served as monasteries, chapels and temples, their coexistence at one site stands as a proud visual representation of a long period of religious tolerance.

Each of the caves is stylishly embellished with a wealth of detailed sculptures. The grandest of these is the great Kailasa Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is the largest single monolithic excavation in the world.
