SOMNATH
Gujarat
Hindu God Shiva once said, `I am always present everywhere but specially in 12 forms and places as the Jyotirlingas.’ Somnath is the first among these 12 holy places. Built at the shore of the Arabian ocean, this temple has a long history of being raided and destroyed by Mughal invaders at six different points in history. But every time it was rebuilt to its past glory and now stands proudly as a symbol of the irrepressible spirit and cultural unity of our society. It is built in the Chalukya style of temple architecture and reflects the skill of Gujarat’s master mason community, the Sompura Salats.
