SHANTINIKETAN
West Bengal
Nobel laureate, poet and artist Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s ardent vision created what is today a university town, Shantiniketan. He founded a school amidst its idyllic settings whose central premise was that learning in a natural environment would be more enjoyable and fruitful. This later developed into the Visva Bharati University, with an emphasis on the study of liberal arts and humanity’s relationship with nature.
The town truly lives the meaning of its Bengali name and is an absolute ‘abode of peace’. The museum and art gallery provide a glimpse into Tagore’s life-work as well as the art and culture of Bengal. The city is also host to numerous social and cultural events throughout the year, that attract not just tourists, but also artisans, folk singers, dancers, and the traditional Baul singers from the neighborhood.
