Day 15: Aizawl to Imphal

We started our drive early today from Aizawl in Mizoram, for a longish drive through insurgency infested mountains, to Imphal in Manipur. A fourth of the drive to Imphal is on mountain tracks, and on rocky paths which are no roads at all!

Origin: Aizawl, in Mizoram
Destination:  Imphal, in Manipur
Distance Covered: 429 kms
States Covered: Mizoram, Assam, Manpur

The roads were good up to Silchar, Assam, and then it turned bad. It was really late when we neared Imphal having had to stop at innumerable security check points en-route. We were looked upon more suspiciously than some odd balls who had driven thousands of kilometers from Tamil Nadu into a place where no one dares to go!

We were always asked if we saw some vehicle or the other on our way by the security forces. There are innumerable tunnels being drilled for roads through the mountains. With no telephone signals most of the time, we were able to establish contact with our hosts in Imphal only when we were near Imphal on the side of the mountain that faces the city.
