CHANDRAGIRI
Andhra Pradesh
On the suburbs of Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, is the historic town of Chandragiri. Built in 1000 AD on a fortified framework, Chandragiri was the capital for the later Vijayanagara kings under whose reign many glorious buildings and temples were constructed.
Chandragiri witnessed the intrigue, valour, greed, horror and treachery that marked the fall of the Vijayanagara kingdom. Subsequently, it passed into oblivion and is now survived by the ruins of eight Saivite and Vaishnavite, Raja mahal, Rani mahal and other ruined structures.
If Chennai is the first physical hold of the British in India, then Chandragiri is the birth place of British India. It is here that Chinappa along with the Nayak of Chandragiri convinced the Vijayanagara rulers to give two parcels of land on lease at Fort St George, near the fishing village of Chennapattanam, in present day Tamil Nadu. This is how the British got the opportunity to first establish themselves in India.
Chandragiri was also the last refuge of the Vijayanagara kings after their exodus from Hampi.
