Tripura

Upon a hillock, divided by a streamlet, Unnakoti is a site of pure archaeological wonder. Considered to be the biggest bas-relief sculpture in India, it has two types of images: rock-carved figures and stone images.

Huge sculptures chiseled out from rock stand quietly, impressive in their sheer size and the unusual iconography that depicts Hindu deities with distinct tribal traits. Adding to the lush landscape here, a beautiful spring has filled up the cavern, called “Sitakund“, and then chosen to dance down the hill terraces.

The beautiful bar reliefs of Unakoti are outstanding example of when archaeology meets myth. The story of Shiva stopping here before moving to Kashi and then cursing the 10 million gods and goddesses to turn into stone, which is what you see here. Click here to see more images.
