AJANTA
Maharashtra
The sepia-hued horseshoe-shaped cave complex, the Ajanta Caves, is chiseled in the rock face of the old Sahyadri hills. These magnificent 29 Buddhist Caves are renowned for their exotic setting, impressive architecture, historic artwork, and long-forgotten history and remained hidden for centuries. Supported by richly carved columns, these caves are beautifully lit to highlight ancient artistic wonders with a heavy religious influence.
The halls here are made with stupas to venerate the Buddha. The cool and dark confines of the caves create an ambience of surreal observations and quiet reflections. From the paintings of Buddha in different moods of contemplation to the vivid illustrations of ancient Jataka tales, the art here is thought to have influenced paintings in Tibet and Srilanka. These colossal creations are constantly studied for their sculpture, iconography, architecture, epigraphy, and painting style.
