Day 10: Siliguri to Guwahati

The longish drive from Siliguri to Guwahati had to be done in a round-about way as the main National Highway was in a mess as advised by our “All seeing GPS H.V.Kumar” sitting in Mumbai. He advised us to go north, just below the border of Sikkim, then east and again south just beside the border of Bhutan and go through Cooch Behar, West Bengal, to Guwahati in Assam! The roads are not bad but we took quite some time to reach Guwahati, well past nightfall.

Origin: Siliguri, West Bengal
Destination: Guwahati, Assam
Distance Covered: 520 kms

A wonderful drive, through the Deoars along the banks of the Teesta River. We filmed a MGNREGA women’s scheme at work and interviewed women working there.

There are 3 functional bridges over river Brahmaputra in Assam. The names of the three bridges are: Saraighat Bridge in Guwahati, Kolia Bhumura Setu in Koliabor, Naranarayan Setu in Jogighopa.

The 4th bridge over Brahmaputra is under construction in Bogibeel, near Dibrugarh, since 2002 and is incomplete after 12 years! We took the Jogigopha Bridge to cross over from north bank of the Brahmaputra to its south bank.
