At the tip of the Indian peninsula is a city most notable for pilgrimage and tourism. Historically, a prodigious centre for art and religion for centuries, its unique location also makes it the area of great trade and commerce. Kanyakumari is especially popular in India for its spectacular sunrises and sunsets, seen from the View Tower and Telescope House. On full-moon evenings, the Chitra Pournami, the sun and moon are seen face to face at the same horizon, as one sets and the other rises.

Rice is the basic food of the people, however, in the mountainous region, Tapioca is the main food. Sea fishes are very popular among the people of Kanyakumari and their preparations are quite spicy with extensive use of coconuts in the curries.
